Mike’s Story:

A college art class gave me the sculpture curiosity, but in 1991 a class instructor showed me how to sharpen his chisels. That’s when the carving career actually began. I have taken classes from some of America’s best carvers, won blue ribbons at shows, and done some instructing as well. Moved to Texas in 2015. Work with a variety of woods, a variety of subjects and tries to use recycled lumber when he can. Most of the work is done with mallet and chisels, or smaller hand tools.
Whimsical and nostalgic would describe most of my work – from wizards and fairy homes to Santas and Native Americans. Basswood and butternut are my favorite woods. The best projects are ones that the aspects of the wood grain, texture and condition help guide my original idea into a new design or concept. Anytime you deal with a medium like wood or stone, you need to be prepared to adapt as you go.
For me, “it’s all about the journey the wood and I take together. Matching technical skills and artist eye to see what lies beneath the surface, and then removing everything that isn’t in that image, While carving, I find a peaceful, spiritual feeling about that journey. That’s what keeps me carving.”
Mike and his wife live in Schulenburg, Texas. His wife Susan Storey Harmon is also an artist.
