Salinas Art Contest

Porfirio Salinas

Porfirio Salinas was a Mexican-American painter known for his impressionistic landscapes. Some of his most admired works depict blooms of wildflowers in the Texas scrubland. Born on November 6th, 1910 in Bastrop, TX to Mexican immigrant farmers, he was first exposed to art after leaving school to work at a local art supply store. After meeting the painter Robert William Wood at the store, Salinas worked as Wood’s studio assistant. It was in the older artist’s studio where he received much of his technical training in painting. Notably, Salinas was one of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s favorite artists, and his work adorned the White House foyer through his term. He was the subject of a 1962 solo exhibition at the Witte Museum in San Antonio. Salinas died on April 18th, 1973 in San Antonio, TX.

Art Contest

The Salinas Youth Art Contest is an annual art contest run by the Lost Pines Art League that is open to students in Kindergarten through 12th grade in the Bastrop ISD area, including homeschooled students. Established back in 1986, the Salinas Youth Art Contest was run by the Bastrop Association for the Arts from 1986-2014, then by the BISD Salinas Art Council in 2015, and finally, by the Lost Pines Art League (formerly the Bastrop Fine Arts Guild) later that year. The Lost Pines Art League additionally awards a $1,000 scholarship each year to a deserving senior art student.
