Learn to paint like the Impressionist In Plein air (outdoors). This class is
designed to give you confidence and the essential skills to paint anywhere.
Teacher, Joan Bohls, is TEA certified art teacher and has painted in oils for
over 20 years. She is active in the Outdoor Painters Society and Oil
Painters of America. Joan Bohls graduated from the University of Texas
where she has studied oil painting as well as taking workshops from
renown artists. This class is for the beginner as well as the proficient artist
who just wants review and practice. Each class will include a lesson in
drawing with practice and a lesson in getting to know your paints. As
weather permits the class will go outside for part of the time. Homework
assignments will be given after each class. A field trip to the 9E Ranch for
the last class. Supply list will be sent before the class.

April 24 (3:00-5:30) Drawing is learning to see; you never really “see”
anything until you draw it. The first class will start with contour drawing.
Knowing your paints and what colors you can make with oils is essential
and in this first class students will take 3 colors and create a color wheel .
If time permits students will do a simple painting.

May 1 (3:00- 5:30) Students will learn to make a gesture drawing as a
way to explore a subject and as a great way to “warm up” and see
something before painting it. The painting activity will be creating a value
scale and then doing a simple still life in 5 values.

May 8 (3:00-5:30) Students will learn to draw using negative space and
learn sighting in perspective. Students will continue to explore and get a
feel for their paints with a mixing activity and paint a simple still life.

May 15 (3:00-5:30) Students will learn about the focal points in creating a
painting and learn to make a “thumb nail” sketch as a notan (dark-light
harmony) with pencil in their sketch book and then with paints.

May 22 (3:00-5:30) Students will learn to create the illusion of depth in
their drawing and paintings using overlap, size, details/edges, value
change and vanishing point. The class will go outside (weather permitting)
and paint or draw using perspective concepts.

May 29 (3:00-5:30) This last class will be a time of going outside and
painting together. The class will meet at the 9E Ranch (Joan Bohls’ home)
where there are many beautiful painting opportunities. This class will be a
celebration of all that everyone has learned and sharing time
